Naturalisation

Naturalisation is the legal process by which a non-British individual becomes a British citizen. This is typically the final step for those who have lived in the UK for several years, often holding Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), settled status, or a long-term visa, such as a spouse visa.

Timelines

  1. Residency Period: Applicants must meet the residency requirement (5 years or 3 years if married to a British citizen).
  2. Application Preparation: Gather necessary documents and complete the application form (1-2 weeks).
  3. Application Submission: Submit the naturalisation application online.
  4. Processing Time: The Home Office typically processes applications within 3 to 6 months.
  5. Citizenship Ceremony: Upon approval, applicants must attend a citizenship ceremony to officially become British citizens.
